A highly appreciated cabbage plant that contains several nutrients. While broccoli is healthy and a perfect complement to cooking, the plant itself requires a lot of care in terms of nutrition. Fertilize often throughout the season and make sure the plants are placed in a sunny or semi-shaded location when planted outside. In the southern parts of Sweden, it is possible to sow directly outdoors, otherwise, it is necessary to start pre-cultivation indoors (around Feb-March) to give the seed enough time to grow strong before planting.
The seeds should be placed about 2 cm deep and prefer bright conditions and moist soil, so remember to water regularly. Try to give the plant extra warmth at the beginning, ideally around 20-25 degrees. When the broccoli has started to emerge, it likes slightly cooler temperatures but it is still important to have bright conditions. For indoor pre-cultivation, we recommend using a plant lamp.
The perfect time to harvest broccoli is around July-October depending on the variety. A tip is to only cut off the top shoot and let the plant develop several side shoots that you can harvest later. If the broccoli is fully grown, it can withstand cold weather, even a few degrees below zero, so don't be too early to harvest it all, instead enjoy the vegetable throughout the late summer.
