Thyme seeds
Thyme, Thymus vulgaris is a charming plant within the family of Lamiaceae. There are many different varieties and not all of them are edible. Most people think of culinary thyme and lemon thyme when they hear the name, but there are many more varieties.
Orange thyme, creeping thyme, and gray-leaved thyme are just some of the many delightful varieties available. Thyme is a perennial, low-growing shrub that belongs to the mint family and has its origins in the open, calcareous, and dry soils of Europe and Asia. The fascinating Thyme genus has over 350 different species, many of which grow wild.
Thyme is a popular and beloved favorite of all our pollinators. It's not uncommon to see them swarming around the plant when it's in bloom, which makes thyme the perfect attraction for a kitchen garden or any other type of vegetation.
Thyme is easy to grow, simple, and versatile. We recommend starting thyme indoors or winter sowing it in plastic containers for larger plants and earlier harvest. The seeds are light germinators, so be careful not to cover them too much, just gently press them into the soil surface. If you start thyme indoors, it's important to harden off the seedlings before planting them outside. Thyme thrives in most soils but prefers a well-drained growing site with a little sand mixed into the soil. It likes both sunny and semi-shady locations, making it easy to place.
If you haven't tried growing thyme before, we highly recommend it, especially the edible varieties, as they add a special touch to cooking!
