Mint seeds
Mint, Mentha, is a genus of plants that belongs to the family Lamiaceae, and today there are over 600 different varieties around the world. Mint originates from the Mediterranean region and Asia, but is now found in most countries.
This fragrant herb has historically been used both in cooking and as a medicinal plant. In many cultures, mint has also symbolized hospitality and a decorated home with mint meant that guests who came to visit were warmly welcomed.
When talking about mint, many people immediately think of the taste of mint, but did you know that there are many more varieties? There are, for example, apple mint, orange mint, chocolate mint, and many more. The area of use for this fantastic plant is broad, where both taste and scent play a central role. It is possible to make everything from fancy drinks and desserts to toothpaste. Brewing tea with mint is something that has always been popular around the world and still is today.
Mint is incredibly easy to grow and spreads quickly thanks to its strong growth. Such strong growth that it is not recommended to grow it directly in the ground or in a place where other vegetation is present as it will outcompete most things. Mint, however, is absolutely fantastic in a pot or in a raised bed where it can thrive and sprout. Mint grows in most soils but prefers well-drained and nutrient-rich soil. It thrives in the sun and partial shade but has a continuous need for water. Mint is perennial but does not thrive in frost and colder climates.
Mint also blooms very beautifully, it gets light violet flowers that grow in cute little wreaths. Very beautiful and incredibly appreciated by all our pollinators, but if you are after the taste of the mint, you should avoid the plant going into bloom as it unfortunately reduces the taste of the leaves.
